The Abbey of Praglia and the Monastery of Monteortone
The Abbey of Praglia and the Cloister of Monteortone
First, we’ll visit the Abbey of Praglia, ancient Abbey built in IX century along the ancient street which took from Este to Padua.
Here we’ll visit the four cloister, the botanical cloister, the pensile cloister, the double cloister and the rustical cloister. Then we’ll walk step by step through the very well preserved rooms of the Abbey, from the ancient Library, the Monumental Refectory with antique wooden furniture, the Salon of Capitolo, where still today the assemblies of the monks take place. We’ll end our visit in the Abbey of Praglia with the Church. Here we’ll enjoy the austerity and silence of this place and the aromatic odour of incense. The majestic Church has been decorated by Zelotti, well-known painter of the frescos in the Castle of Catajo and many Venetian Villas.
In the end, we’ll visit the Monastery of Monteortone, ancient Augustinian monastery and now Salesian, of which we’ll visit the cloister.
The Monastery was built because of the Sanctuary of the Holy Maria Assumption next to, where it seems the Holy Maria is appeared in the XIIIth century and which is now destination of many pilgrims every year.
Then, we will be guided by Padre Antonio to the discovery of a curious exhibition: a permanent exhibition of nativity scenes.
And the curious thing about that exhibition is that it is inside an air-raid shelter dug up to protect the population of Monteortone during the Second world war by air raids.
