Canova Experience, Asolo & Possagno Tour

Canova Experience, Asolo & Possagno Tour

The visit of the historic centre of Asolo will start through Loreggia Gate, part of the ancient fourteenth century walls. We’ll pass Villa Freya and then Zen fountain with the head of the San Marco lion until we’ll enter via Browning. Hwew we’ll walk under the arcades with its tiny shops of typical products like handmade pasta, desserts and wines. We’ll soon reach the Duomo and Piazza Garibaldi, the fulcrum of the city. From here we’ll descend the stairs to the entrance of the church. From the churchyard we will enjoy a splendid view of the Asolo hills and admire the view. We will continue beyond the Loggia della Ragione and the Palazzo del Vescovado, which now houses the Civic Museum, and we will ascend to the Queen’s Castle, which takes its name from Caterina Cornaro, Queen of Cyprus and Armenia. At the end of the 15th century, Caterina Cornaro ceded the island of Cyprus to the Republic of Venice in her kingdom and obtained Asolo and the Castle in exchange. From the top of the tower of the Castle we will admire the breath-taking panorama on the surroundings: you’ll realize it is one of the best-known Italian views. The fortress houses inside the theatre dedicated to actress Eleonora Duse, who found his inner peace here in Asolo after the unhappy and tormented love with D’Annunzio, Italian writer: they both lived during XXth century. Leaving the castle behind us, we will walk along Via Canova: the ancient baker enters this street, which for 600 years has made the bread for Asolo’s citizens, quite further you’ll find the prestigious Embroidery School. We will then return to the historic centre and along via Roma we will arrive at the ancient Roman aqueduct called La Bot: about 700 meters long, it took thermal water from the local spring and brought it to the square where the thermal building was located. From there we will continue with a downhill walk towards “Pagnano”. Along the way we will meet Villa De Mattia with its romantic Italian garden, we will admire in the distance Villa Contarini known as the Armeni family with its vineyards and the “Casa Longobarda” House of the court architect Graziolo. Step by step we reach the “Maglio di Pagnano”, dating back to the fifteenth century and today an important example of industrial archaeology.

Once in Possagno, the first stop will be the Museum dedicated to Canova. The Gypsotheca, where the original plaster models of Antonio Canova’s works are conserved. In the Casa Natale there are paintings, drawings and clothes by the artist. The garden and the park complete with the library and the historical archive a unique and original space in which the illustrious sculptor was born and found inspiration. After the visit we will continue with a walk uphill to the top of the Col Draga 342 meters above sea level, from where the Canovian Temple stands, designed by Canova in several stages between 1804 and 1818. The expense for the construction of the neoclassical building was almost entirely supported by the sculptor and the works participated almost all the community of Possagno that also provided some materials and voluntary work. Inaugurated in 1830, the Canoviano Temple is now the parish church of Possagno.
