Cittadella, a walled city of the Venetian Region
During this tour, we’ll discover the romantic city of Cittadella, one of the most beautiful walled cities in Veneto and the only one which still has the ramparts wall preserved and walkable. Cittadella has roman origins: Romans built this city in the III century along the Via Postumia, important connection between Aquileia and Genoa threw all Northern Italy.
Then, between the XII and the XIII century, when the city of Padua started to extend its borders and started to conflict with Treviso and Vicenza, the governors of Padua decided to fortify Cittadella with a huge and thick wall.
The walls of Cittadella are average 2,1 meters thick and have four gates: Porta Padovana, Porta Bassanese, Porta Trevisana and Porta Vicentina to get into the city, in the direction of the four cardinal points.
Here, we’ll be accompanied by the specialized tour Guide and we’ll walk along the ramparts and we’ll admire the view of the city from above, as the soldier in the Middle Ages did.
We’ll walk in the city and we’ll see the most important monuments: The Captain’s House, where the Captain of the guards with his soldiers lived and which still preserves frescos from the XVI century; the Tower of Malta, today Archaeological Museum, which is even cited in Dante’s Divine Comedy because of the bloody tortures done by Ezzelino da Romano in it; the Palazzo Pretorio, in Middle Ages headquarter of the governors of Padua; the Theatre, whose facade is attributed to Giuseppe Jappelli and the Art Gallery of Cittadella in the Dome, which contains paintings of Palma il Giovane.
