Padua, the city of fresco

Padua, the city of Fresco

With this experiential Tour we’ll get to know the city of Padua, which, during the XIIIth century, was strongly enriched culturally and artistically thanks to the government of the family of the Carraresi.

We start our promenade through the city starting from Prato della Valle, Padua’s most important square and one of the biggest squares in Europe. It’s surrounded by a romantic canal in which the 78 statues of the major celebrities and important men of the city and of the Venetian Region are reflected on the water. We’ll walk through little bridges and boulevards where we’ll travel through the history of the city thank to the statues of the personalities we’ll see. We’ll see Antenor, the legendary founder of the city of Padua, who escaped from the burning Troy and started his adventure travel in Europe and finally founded Padua. We’ll see also other celebrities such as poets, scientists, scholars, and writers who gave Padua a great prestige. Tito Livio, Torquato Tasso, Ludovico Ariosto, Andrea Mantegna, and Francesco Petrarca are just some of the names of men of culture who made Padua the city of culture it is today.

Step by step we’ll reach the Basilica of the Saint Antony: built in 1237, after the canonisation of the Franciscan monk Antonius, it is now a great mix of different styles, such as Romanic, Gothic and Renaissance style with even some references to the Byzantine Art. Inside we’ll be enchanted by the beautiful frescos painted by Altichiero da Zevio, Jacopo Avanzi, Donatello and Giusto de’ Menabuoi. Of this great artist we’ll admire the decorations of the Chapel of the Blessed Luca Belludi. He was a man of great knowledge and intelligence and a dear friend of the Saint Antonius. He was canonised and nominated the protector of the students: still today students kneel in front of his statue and pray in hope to pass their exams.
We’ll continue our tour in Padua with the visit of the Palazzo del Bo, and we’ll come to know its ancient history. The University of Padua was found in 1222 by a group of students, who escaped from the University of Bologna, and where many illustrious academics taught such as Galileo Galilei, who spent in Padua the eighteen best years of his life (as he wrote).
We’ll continue our promenade in the historic centre of Padua and we’ll reach Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza della Frutta, where still today the market is organised and we’ll visit Palazzo della Ragione, called Il Salone (the Salon of Padua). Here we’ll admire the frescos dedicated to an astrologic theme: stars, planets and zodiacal signs repainted in the XIV century. The previous frescos, probably painted by Giotto, were damaged by the destructive power of fire.

Once we finished visiting the Palazzo della Ragione we’ll visit the Battistero del Duomo, the Baptistery of the Duomo of Padua, painted all over with fresco by Giusto de’ Menabuoi with religious theme: we’ll admire his paintings of Saints, Angels and biblical Scenes. Here we can touch by hand how important the Carrara family has been for Padua: they gave the commission to paint all these beauties enriching the city of Padua, turning this place in the culture city that we can still admire.
We’ll continue our promenade towards Piazza dei Signori, destination of the young people in Padua for the aperitif with Spritz Aperol, white wine, and finger food. Then we’ll walk near by the historical café of Padua, the Café Pedrocchi, built at the beginning of the XVIIIth century by Antonio Pedrocchi who, son of a coffee producer from Bergamo, gave Giuseppe Jappelli the commission to project this wonderful Café which at that époque was a meeting point for intellectuals and which is now an important meeting point for the people of Padua for the important occasions.
