Our guided tour of Padua starts at “Caffè Pedrocchi”, known as the “Caffè without doors”, still a major symbol of the town. A meeting place for writers, poets and patriots, this neoclassical building designed by G. Jappelli – with elegant columns, four lions and sumptuous original interiors still represents a special age and a peculiar philosophy of life.
Our walking tour then will reach the town hall building, that is the result of a long evolution, where you can admire a medieval tower next to byzantine capitals, a renaissance courtyard with elegant staircases close to XIX-century integrations and a main façade completed in the ‘30s.
We will explore the “ancient” and the “new” courtyards of “Palazzo Bo”, the historical University building. The University of Padova was founded in 1222, one of the first in Europe, and has always been a core institution for the town, a pilaster of its identity. It is also famous for its “Aula Magna”, where Galileo Galilei taught as professor. We can see many coats of arms reminding students and professors of the past, and Elena Cornaro statue, the
first woman in the world to gain a university degree.
The walking tour then leads to the traditional market squares: Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza della Frutta, coloured and animated meeting places of local life! In between the great “Palazzo della Ragione”, a masterpiece of medieval architecture holding the largest astrological frescoes cycle in the world, overlooks the market area. The itinerary ends at IAT Pedrocchi offices.
