With the Asolo and Possagno tour, you will be fascinated by the great works of art of Canova. You will visit the Museum of Canova and the great Canova Temple. Finally you will enjoy a walk in the beautiful and characteristic village of Asolo.
This tour between Asolo and Possagno is divided into two stages.
The visit of the historic center of Asolo will begin by crossing Porta Loreggia, part of the ancient fourteenth-century walls, past Villa Freya and Zen fountain with the head of the lion of San Marco. Along Via Browning, we will walk under the arcades stopping to admire the stores of typical products such as handmade pasta, cakes and wines, we will admire the back of the Cathedral and from Piazza Garibaldi, the heart of the city, we will descend the stairs to the entrance of the church.
From the churchyard we will enjoy a splendid view of Asolo’s hills and admire the panorama.
We will continue past the Loggia della Ragione and the Palazzo del Vescovado, which today houses the Civic Museum, and climb up to the Castello della Regina, which takes its name from Caterina Cornaro, Queen of Cyprus and Armenia.
From the towers of the Castle we will admire the splendid panorama of the territory. The fortress houses inside the theater dedicated to the famous actress Eleonora Duse, who found her inner peace here in Asolo after her unhappy and tormented love with D’Annunzio.
Leaving the castle behind us, we will walk along Via Canova, where we will find the ancient wood-burning oven that has been producing bread for 600 years, and further on, the prestigious Embroidery School. We will then return to the historic center and along Via Roma we will arrive at the ancient Roman aqueduct called La Bot: about 700 meters long it took thermal water from the source Tintina and brought it to the square where there was the spa building.
From there we will continue with a walk downhill towards Pagnano. Along the way we will meet Villa De Mattia with its beautiful Italian garden, we will admire in the distance Villa Contarini called degli Armeni with its vineyards and the Longobard House of the court architect Graziolo.
Step by step we will reach Maglio di Pagnano, dating back to the 15th century and today an important example of industrial archeology.
Once in Possagno, the first stop is the Museum dedicated to Canova. In the Gypsotheca are preserved the original plaster models of Antonio Canova’s works, while in the Birthplace are the paintings, drawings and clothes of the artist. The garden, the courtyard and the park complete, together with the library and the historical archives, a unique and original space in which the illustrious sculptor was born and found inspiration.
At the end of the visit we will continue the tour between Asolo and Possagno with a walk uphill to the top of Col Draga at 342 meters above sea level, from where stands the Canova Temple, designed by Canova on several occasions between 1804 and 1818. The expense for the construction of the neoclassical building was borne almost entirely by the sculptor and practically the entire community of Possagno participated in the work, also providing some materials and voluntary labor. Inaugurated in 1830, the Tempio Canoviano is now the parish church of Possagno.
Guaranteed departure with a minimum of 4 paying adults.
