Discover the history of trade between Venice and the Euganean Hills from the Middle Ages to the present by navigating the waters of the Battaglia Canal on a Gondola and visiting the Civic Museum of River Navigation.
The town of Battaglia Terme, located between Padua and Monselice, develops along the banks of the Battaglia Canal, built by the Padovani (citizens of Padua) between 1189 and 1201. The Canal was an important transport route between the Euganean Hills and the city of Venice, both for the transport of passengers and goods. The waters of the canal were ploughed by large burci loaded with trachyte destined for the lagoon ports. The waterway also played a key role in the development of the city. The energy derived from the river’s water enabled the operation of mills, sawmills and paper mills, making Battaglia an important artisan center.
A visit to the Civic Museum of River Navigation will introduce you to the town’s history and the lived-life memories of its inhabitants. In addition to encapsulating materials and evidence on the traditions and practices that developed thanks to the canal, this unique tour will illustrate the various types of boats, including the Paduan burcio, and their construction characteristics. Dulcis in fundo, you will navigate the waters of the canal aboard an original Venetian gondola.
We will end our tour with a visit to Villa Selvatico Miola. In the heart of the Euganean Hills Regional Park stands this 17th-century Villa, which from the top of a hill is reflected in the sulfurous water ponds of a wonderful spa garden designed by Giuseppe Jappelli. The Villa, in its noble rooms, holds a cycle of frescoes by painter Luca Ferrari, dedicated to the mythical founder of the city of Padua: Antenore. The depictions intertwine with the volumes of the interior architecture in unique and original compositions. On the ceiling of the central hall stands a canvas by Alessandro Varotari, il Padovanino, depicting the glory of the Selvatico family. Descending the monumental staircase leading to the garden, we will stop at the Villa’s bistro, where we will enjoy a glass of wine produced from the estate’s vines.
Guaranteed departure with a minimum of 4 paying adults.
