A guided walk in Vicenza, the city of Andrea Palladio: a real open-air museum. Don’t forget, among all monuments, to enter Teatro Olimpico.
Book the guided tour in Vicenza and discover this pearl.
The golden age of Vicenza began in 1540, when the Venetian aristocracy decided to reorganize the city and its countryside and called for the arduous task Andrea di Pietro della Gondola, known as Palladio, one of the greatest architects of the time.
Palladio was commissioned to design the new residences owned by the Venetian nobles. During those years Vicenza was enriched with wonderful private palaces and public buildings while in the countryside extraordinary villas were designed.
The buildings designed by Palladio realize a continuous dialectic between ancient and modern and are recognizable for their elegance, balance, symmetry. With his works Palladio modifies the urban layout of the city of Vicenza and part of the surrounding landscape. He creates an original living interpretation of classical antiquity that will profoundly influence the urban planning and landscape of European countries and the entire world.
“The city of Vicenza and Palladio’s villas in the Veneto region” have therefore been nominated UNESCO Site for a total of 23 palaces in Vicenza and 24 villas in the surrounding area.
The guided walk in Vicenza begins at the Olympic Theater: the absolute summit of Andrea Palladio’s creativity.
The theater, inaugurated on March 3, 1585, is the oldest covered theater in the world. Inside an enclosed space, Palladio wanted to simulate the open-air setting of classical theaters. He placed a monumental scenafronte flanked by two wings and a semi-elliptical cavea of thirteen steps, concluded at the top by a columned exedra, partly open and partly with niches in the wall.
Beyond the three openings of the scenafronte are the wooden perspectives representing the streets of Thebes, created by Vincenzo Scamozzi for the inaugural performance of Oedipus and which have become fixed and immutable in time.
After that, we will move to Palazzo Chiericati, designed in 1550 for Girolamo Chiericati, also one of Andrea Palladio’s masterpieces. Embellished with frescoes and stuccoes, the palace hosts one of the most prestigious European civic collections of paintings, sculptures and applied arts from the thirteenth to the twentieth century.
Taking Corso Palladio we head towards the Sanctuary of Santa Corona.
Splendid church of Dominican foundation whose Gothic interior houses many important sculptures and paintings, including Giovanni Bellini’s masterpiece, “The Baptism of Christ”, the Valmarana Chapel by Andrea Palladio and works by Bartolomeo Montagna, Paolo Veronese and Giambattista Pittoni.
We will stroll along the Corso admiring little stores and splendid palaces along the way, up to Contrà Porti where the Palladio Museum awaits us.
Finally, returning to the corso, we will find in front of us the mighty mass of the Basilica Palladiana surrounded by the city squares.
Guaranteed departure with a minimum of 4 paying adults.
