Firstly, you leave behind the sharp profiles of the Euganean Hills and head decisively eastwards, following the winding course of the Vigenzone canal, an ancient waterway that was important for river navigation. We pass through Gorgo and Bovolenta until we reach Pontelongo, which owes its development to the presence of a large sugar mill built in the 19th century and still in operation today.
Secondly, leaving the town of sugar, we come to the town of Benedictine courts: Correzzola. A metal footbridge takes you to the 16th-century Corte Benedettina built by the monks and the parish church dedicated to San Leonardo.
After a few kilometres, near Castelcaro, a tourist sign indicates that where an oratory now stands, in the fourteenth century the Carraresi built a military outpost to guard their “salt road”. Chioggia, now just a few kilometres away, had one of the most important salt pans in the Mediterranean in the Middle Ages.
Finally, during the last stretch the landscape changes considerably, the expanses of fields furrowed by a dense network of ditches and canals giving way to the flat and shimmering expanses of the lagoon from which the historic centre of Chioggia, the destination of your itinerary, emerges.
