Rent a bike and ride the Euganean Hills Loop, the most comprehensive cycling route for exploring the Euganean Hills. You’ll be able to admire the villas and castles along the way and enhance your experience with tours and tastings.
The Euganean Hills Loop by bike is a route of approximately 60 km, almost entirely on bike paths, with the exception of a few dirt sections, and is mostly flat.
You can start the route from any point. You can pick up your bike at the pickup point in Montegrotto, or request delivery and set off comfortably from your hotel in Abano or Montegrotto. Along the route, you’ll pass by numerous monuments. The first is Villa Draghi, which dominates the town of Montegrotto Terme from its elevated position; a few kilometers further on, you’ll be treated to a splendid view of Catajo Castle, an incredible 16th-century landmark known as the “royal palace of the Euganean Hills” with its 350 rooms.
A straight stretch along the Canale Battaglia, an ancient waterway for transport to and from Padua, will then take you to Villa Emo, which will open up before your eyes with its beautiful garden.
When you arrive in Monselice, you will have covered a third of your tour and will allow yourself a well-deserved stop for a walk through the town. You will see the Castle of Monselice, one of the few fully-furnished castles, then head up to the famous Seven Churches and enjoy the view of the town from above.
You will leave for the town of Este and in the gardens of the Castle you can finally refresh yourself with a packed lunch or a typical lunch in one of the many restaurants in the historic centre.
After a break you will get back on your bikes and ride first along the canals of the reclaimed land, then along long cycle paths immersed in the countryside with the view of the gentle curves of the hills to your right.
Near Lozzo Atestino you will observe from the outside the Castello di Valbona, which offers a fine testimony to the medieval history of the area. It was the stronghold of the famous noble Paduan family whose history is intertwined with that of the two castles previously admired in Monselice and Este.
Another twenty or so kilometres to return to base, a final effort will allow you to reach your last point of interest, Praglia Abbey, an ancient monastery dating back to the 11th century, home to the National Monumental Library and the Laboratory for the restoration of antique books.
