With this hiking in the Euganean Hills along the Lorenzoni path, we will discover Monte Venda, which at 601 metres is the highest peak of the entire Euganean Hills Regional Park. We will walk through woods rich in vegetation and breathtaking views until we reach the ruins of the Olivetani Monastery.
With this hiking tour we will discover the Regional Park of the Euganean Hills (the first Regional Park in Veneto, established in 1989) a hilly area of volcanic origin of about 19 thousand hectares.
Importantly the Park protects a vast and surprisingly rich territory in which more than 1400 botanical species are concentrated, equal to about 1/6 of the Italian flora.
We leave for our hiking tour in Euganean Hills along the upper portion of Monte Venda and discover all its secrets. During the hike we will visit the ruins of the Oliventani Monastery (olivetani monks a branch of benedictine monks): a medieval monastery dedicated to St John the Baptist, of which the perimeter walls of part of the church, the bell tower and the crypt remain.
The first historical testimony is from 1197, when the monk Adamo da Torreglia, retired here to live as an hermit, then followed by the benedictine monks of Santa Giustina of Padua.
Further curiosities include that Monte Venda also holds another important secret from 1955 to 1998 it was a very important NATO base and more than five hundred soldiers worked inside this important information hub.
